Self-described "progressives" on the left have gone nuts over the past
several years over creeping legislative and regulatory inroads made by
religious conservatives. Fascism! They are quick to reply. The
government can't tell us what to do with our own bodies, or in the
privacy of our own homes! Abortion, homosexuality? Hey, that's our
choice, its our bodies. NSA eavesdropping, warrant-less searches?
Hey, those are our private phonecalls made from our private phones.
Searches of private cars without probable cause to enforce seat belt
use? Hey, what a great idea!
I aggree with the Coyote Blog here. You're either for government interference or you're against. You can't pick and choose. Personally I'm not driving my car without my seat belt but don't tell me I have to. You're just getting in Darwin's way. And allow insurance companies to refuse to pay for treatments needed because you didn't wear a seat belt. Let's have a free market solution to seat belts. That way taxpayers aren't paying for treating stupid people.
If you have a certain type of person committing a crime then you must form a picture of what those people are are like. The organization that is committing acts of terrorism is comprised of young (for the most part) MIddle Eastern males. Ok, that's pretty broad. We certainly can't, nor should we, question every Middle Eastern male. So in addition to being MIddle Eastern males they use throw away cell phones to set off bombs. We can't search all Middle Eastern males for such phones, but when several MIddle Eastern males walk into Wal-Mart and buy what I would think is an excessive number of these phones then I think this might be an issue.
Remember, not one grey-haired black Baptist eldery woman has been identified as being part of any Islamic Terrorist group.
We are bloggers with boatloads of opinions, and none of us come close to agreeing with any other one of us all of the time. But we do agree on this: The new leadership in the House of Representatives needs to be thoroughly and transparently free of the taint of the Jack Abramoff scandals, and beyond that, of undue influence of K Street.
We are not naive about lobbying, and we know it can and has in fact advanced crucial issues and has often served to inform rather than simply influence Members.
But we are certain that the public is disgusted with excess and with privilege. We hope the Hastert-Dreier effort leads to sweeping reforms including the end of subsidized travel and other obvious influence operations. Just as importantly, we call for major changes to increase openness, transparency and accountability in Congressional operations and in the appropriations process.
As for the Republican leadership elections, we hope to see more candidates who will support these goals, and we therefore welcome the entry of Congressman John Shadegg to the race for Majority Leader. We hope every Congressman who is committed to ethical and transparent conduct supports a reform agenda and a reform candidate. And we hope all would-be members of the leadership make themselves available to new media to answer questions now and on a regular basis in the future.
I've decided that I am starting a gun buyback program if you live in the Southern Phoenix area. Well if you want to drive in from Glendale or Peoria that's ok with me. I will pay $25 guns in non-working condition and $50 for guns in working order. These guns will be given to defenseless individuals for their own protection.
