Found a couple of links on Michelle's blog about guns and bloggers. SarahK's story is very funny but Jason's not so much. But I'm a bit concerned about Jason's story for a number of reasons. First the story itself didn't seem to be available to read but I was able to gather some idea of what happened. If I've got it wrong then feel free to correct me. Second based on what I've read Jason may have caused some of the trouble he's in.
People I'm very much opposed to most of the gun laws on the books today. I'm an outspoken advocate of Individual Rights as manadated by the Bill of Rights. But for god's sake let's work to change the law's. Confrontation with the cop's is just going nowhere. We need to live with the law's until they're changed. Push the letter and the spirit of the law but don't break it. Educate the ignorant, don't get in their face and shout about your rights.
later that same evening:
Ok, I think I might have stated that badly. I didn't mean to imply Jason did all that although I did get the impression that he was less than fully cooperative. But all too often I see "self defense advocates" coming off as "gun-nuts".
A comment to "Left Behind" just can't say enough. Some many times over the last 30 years I've tried to figure out where I stood, and even what I stood for. Lately I've even called myself a Liberal-Conservative or Conservative-Liberal. Libertarian is probably more accurate although that's been translated to "gun toting nut case" on at least one occasion. I'm for personal liberty. As long as I'm not bothering anyone else just leave me alone. You go your way and I'll go mine. Live and let live. I try to follow the principle of Non-Aggression. Just remember the flip side of that and all the rest is that I maintain the right to defend myself against violations of my rights.
If you aren't sure where you fit in today's political spectrum go here and take the "World's Smallest Political Quiz". You might be surprised.
Are you one of those who applaud Zero Tolerance? Then you've never paid attention to the trouble it causes. ZT just means that no one has to think. "Sorry, that's the policy" A boy helps a friend move to a new apartment and accidently drops a kitchen knife in the back of his car. School security sees it. Boy is expelled for bringing a weapon to school. Huh??? Nobody is permitted to say it was just a kitchen knife and that the boy didn't even realize it was there because ZERO Tolerance doesn't allow for it. Go here and see what Randy Cassingham has to say about it. You might want to go ahead and subcribe to his (free) newsletter while you're at it.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Everytime I read this I can't figure out how somebody can make this out to mean only the National Guard can keep and bear arms. For christ sake any seventh grader that has been exposed to sentence diagramming could see that the operative part of the statement is "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Guns outlawed in DC. Crime increases. Concealed weapons allowed in Arizona and Florida. Crime decreases. Based on Justice department figures ya'll. Go look it up yourself. I know you won't believe me.
So here I am. Looking for a platform to spout off on things no will care about. Like why no one remembers the "stop" in "right turn on red after stop". Or how do we put the "Rights" back into the "Bill of Rights". How about putting the "Merry" back in "Merry Christmas"? Perhaps trying to turn "Zero Tolerance" into "Reasonable and Thoughtful Rules and Regulations". Or maybe just where do I find a good pizza in Southern Phoenix/Tempe/Chandler/Mesa?
